PACIFICA’S WESTERN NATIVE PLANT GARDEN
Native plants make a wonderful addition to any garden but, especially, perhaps, to gardens in rural areas. There are several reasons to include natives in your garden, including:
native plants are adapted to the rain available in the area
native plants are adapted to the insects and ecology of an area
native plants can be both beautiful and useful (edible, herbal, shade, etc)
native plants are a wonderful addition to a garden that includes birds and wildlife in its plan
it’s also fascinating to learn about the plants native to a region and the parts they have played in its ecology and history
Pacifica’s western native plant garden will, as the rest of the garden, be primarily about information…in this case for home landscapers.
PRELIMINARY GOALS for the Home Landscape Native Plant Garden include:
1) To offer plants for viewing and as much information as possible on interpretive cards
2) To have a showy border along the fence along Water Gap Road
3) To include information about natives for birds and wildlife and develop a program for kids to sculpt native animals (topiary, recycled, straw, etc)
The first section of this garden (currently being worked on…slowly, like everything!) will be next to the fence to showcase some of this area’s beauties. The plant list for this area will include:

HOME LANDSCAPE WESTERN NATIVE PLANT GARDEN
Plants growing naturally in an area are inherently adapted to that area, requiring less care, less water, fewer chemicals. Pacifica’s planned Western Native Plant Garden will showcase for the home gardener some of the west’s beautiful native plants along with information about how they can be used in home landscapes. Interpretive signs for each plant will include information about placement and culture and uses other than ornamental (shade, edible, birds, etc) as well as eventual height, width, color.
