Greetings!
Pacifica enjoyed bringing our Caterpillar program “Problem Solving in the Land of ‘Y’” to 27 schools throughout Josephine and Jackson Counties in 2006-2007. The Caterpillar conducted programs for 293 classes; that tallies to over 6,500 students! Thank you for your part in hosting the Caterpillar.
Pacifica’s Caterpillar Science Program is ready to schedule schools for our year-long theme – available from mid October through May. We have been busy preparing for our 6th year with the theme of… “ROCK’ n ROOTS: Rocks, Minerals, Fossils, Soil, and Roots” An overview of the rock cycle (using Rocky the puppet) will introduce numerous activities about fossils, kinds of rocks, identifying minerals, and exploring soil and how it is an important part of our world.
The program outline is available. Activities will be correlated to State bench marks; this reference will be available with program materials. As a result of teacher input, students in grades 2nd-5th will have a 75 minute program and use journals, and students in K & 1st, a 45 minute program. All programs will be age appropriate.
Cost: The cost of a school visit is $450 per day for Josephine Co. schools and $475 per day for Jackson Co. schools. There are some subsidies available for schools, call to find out details. You will only need to fund one visit this year. Due to our high demand in both counties we will only have one program theme and will schedule throughout the year. Four classes can visit the caterpillar per day – that works out to approximately $35 per class – still a great deal in these times of constrained budgets. With grants more difficult to maintain, your contributions are appreciated. If needed, you might seek potential funding from your parent organization to help support a Caterpillar visit.
To Schedule: Select a key contact that will help with logistics such as parking and scheduling classes. Next contact me with a few potential dates that work for your school. We will attempt to consolidate dates for Jackson Co. schools. If there are any questions, please give me a call.
Sincerely, Vanessa Martinez – Program Facilitator
