What is the Caterpillar?

The Caterpillar: A Mobile Science & Nature Center

The Caterpillar is a unique mobile science and nature center in a 32 foot RV. We have been taking environmental science to local elementary schools and events since 2001, involving up to 7,000 kids a year. Our programs provide students with “hands-on” activities and supporting displays linked to our curriculum. Through science-based inquiry, these programs foster the joy of learning about science and nature.

We provide schools with changing displays and equipment that might not otherwise be available. Started in Josephine County, we have expanded into Jackson County.

School Programs

The science trailer visits schools once a year with a new theme. The state-benchmarked curriculum has been developed to provide programs of slightly different content and length (from 45 to 75 minutes) for children of different ages. After an introduction (often involving a story, puppet or game), students rotate among stations, each with a hands-on activity related to the current theme. Students in 2nd through 5th grades each receive a journal with activity sheets. The cost of a school visit is $450 per day for Josephine County schools and $475 per day for Jackson County schools. School contributions are approximately 1/3 of our operating costs; grants and donations are instrumental in funding our programs. We can visit 4 classes a day – that’s only about $35 per class! Past themes have included “Cycles,” “Rock ‘n’ Roots,” “Night and Day,” “Adaptations,” “Riddles in Biodiversity”, “The Wonders of Water,” “Invisible Waves” and “Land of Y (Scientific Experimentation).”
